This statue has been made from volcanic ash by survivors of Mt. Pinatubo, which erupted in the Philippines in 1991.
In 1991, the eruption of Mt.Pinatubo in the Philippines devastated the surrounding area, robbing the inhabitants of their homes and fields. In subsequent years flows of mud and ash from the mountain covered more villages and fields.
The Pinatubo Ash Art Ware Project was started by Ernesto and Luz Gamboa, an evacuee couple with seven children. After receiving training from the government, the Gamboas and four other evacuees cooperated to establish the ash art project. Currently the group has fifteen regular employees. The project also generates work for other evacuees in the area by employing them to create boxes for the statues.
